Fight The Cold With Eight Easy Tips

Cold season seems to always be right around the corner.  Every year millions of people catch the common cold and wonder what is the best way to fight the cold.  While there is still no cure for the common cold, there are a number of things that you can do to minimize your chances of catching it.  The cold differs from the flu in that most people will not feel as achy or have symptoms like diarrhea, a sore stomach, and a fever.

The common cold is very contagious in that it can survive outside of the body and is easily aerosolized (can live in air droplets excreted from the body).  Colds are more prevalent during winter months because people tend to stay indoors and are close to each other.  This enables the virus to spread from person to person very easily. The contagiousness combined with people staying indoors during the winter months, all contribute to the rapid spread of the virus and make it hard to fight the cold.  That being said, there are a number of things that you can do to fight the cold and we have outlined them below.

Eight Tips To Fight The Cold

  1. Avoid shaking people’s hands. Germs and viruses are spread easily this way. Bowing or head nodding is a viable alternative.
  2. Eat properly. Plenty of fresh fruit and vegetables along with antioxidants (blueberries are an excellent source) will help to boost your immune system and fight the cold.
  3. Be active. This not only boosts your immune system but will help to keep your body in shape as well.
  4. Wash your hands often, especially before eating.
  5. Avoid touching your face. Rubbing your eyes and nose can spread germs really quickly.
  6. Stop smoking. Cigarette smoke can block your airways and make breathing difficult, exacerbating your symptoms.
  7. Clean surfaces in your house. Light switches, door knobs, keyboards, and other surfaces can hold onto germs for a long time.
  8. Try to relieve stress. Stress depletes our immune system and makes it easy for bacteria and germs to invade our bodies.
